In a few weeks the people of Harlow will have an important decision to make, whether or not to return Robert Halfon as their MP.
I do not know of another MP who has fought so hard to improve the lives of the people they represent. The list of campaigns he has fought and won on our behalf is baffling long, too many to mention in one letter. First and foremost has been his continuing fight to cut the cost of living for working people, chief amongst which is his ongoing campaign to cut and freeze the cost of fuel. So successful has this campaign been that it has been the longest freeze in fuel duty for 20 years, resulting in an actual cut in 2011. The average motorist now saves £11 every time they fill up at the pump.
Robert has voted for lower taxes for lower earners – cutting income tax for 26 million people. 4000 people in Harlow no longer pay income tax. The rate at which you begin to pay tax has now risen as well. From 2010 the personal tax free allowance has risen from around £6,000 to £11,000 and now to £12,500. As a result of these increases to the personal allowance a typical basic rate taxpayer will be £905 better off.
Robert voted for the biggest real terms increase in the minimum wage since 2008 and increase of the apprenticeship wage by 20%. He also voted to introduce a compulsory National living wage, helping some of the lowest paid in our society.
Not many people will know that Robert voted to introduce an annual banker’s tax which raises £2.5 – £3 billion each year to fund emergency services such as the Herts & Essex air ambulance service.
Robert has also voted to extend free school meals to disadvantaged students at FE colleges including Harlow College. He has worked tirelessly to support many local charities and volunteer services. He campaigned for the local bingo hall to have bingo duty cut and succeeded. He worked to secure that Harlow received Enterprise Zone status that will create 5000 skilled research and development jobs for the people of Harlow.
Robert has done countless good work for the people of Harlow and is the best MP this town has ever had. The choice on June 8th is clear, vote for Harlow, vote Robert Halfon.
