One to one support has helped students with special educational needs to succeed.
BURNT Mill Academy, in Harlow, prides itself on the lengths it goes to to support all students to achieve their very best.
This year, students were thrilled to secure grades which enable them to go onto the next steps of their education.
When it came to sitting exams, Charlie Mutimer, 16, from Harlow, suffered with anxiety and panic attacks. Working with the nurture group for his core subjects helped him to achieve a grade 4 – a pass – in English literature.
He said: “I studied the books so hard and was passionate about it. The results make me feel relieved that my hard work paid off. I feel really happy with the results. That grade 4 has made my day!
“I spent most of my lessons in the nurture group and just went into regular lessons for my options. It was good as I had one to one and extra help.
“The school helped to calm me down when it came to the exams. When I got panic attacks, they gave me items to fiddle with in the exams and taught me breathing techniques, like counting backwards from ten. That all helped. I could not have done it without that support.”
Charlie is going on to Harlow College to study childcare and has ambitions of becoming a teaching assistant.
