Parents signing up for Harlow’s newest school

THE learning opportunities Harlow’s newest secondary school is offering is enticing parents to sign-up a year before doors open.

Sir Frederick Gibberd College opens in the town in September 2019, starting with Year 7, with a mission to provide a centre of excellence for post-16 education in the future.

The school and sixth form are being opened by BMAT, which operates two other secondaries and four primaries in the town, to offer students aged 11 to 19 more quality options closer to home.

At the first open event recently, parents met with head of school Dee Conlon and submitted applications on the spot to secure their child a place.

Among them was Sophie Cowley who has applied for daughter Hollie to be among the first cohort of Year 7 students in 2019.
Currently Year 6 at William Martin Community Primary School, ten-year-old Hollie is keen to join the school.

Ms Cowley, of Harlow, said: “The purpose-built building and brand-new facilities will create a fantastic, optimum learning environment.

“The staff are keen, passionate and excited to be teaching at the new school and that will transfer to the students. My daughter’s love of reading and the school’s encouragement of that will be fantastic; Hollie is keen to share that enthusiasm.

“I am certain this is the school for my daughter due to the promise to support and nurture each student to encourage them to reach their full potential and the offer of a wide range of academic subjects and extra-curricular activities. The continued learning outside of normal school hours sounds fantastic.

“If Hollie secures a place, I will feel extremely privileged to be a parent of a student embarking on a whole new chapter of exemplary teaching in Harlow and happy she will not have to travel a long distance to obtain this high standard.”

Irina Hadzhieva is keen for nine-year-old daughter Melina Stoilova to join Year 7 in 2020.

The Year 5 pupil at Pemberley Academy joined her primary school when that, too, was under construction.

Ms Hadzhieva, of Harlow, said: “The new school has attracted me as it will be new build, plus the head is motivated for her students’ success. I fully trust Mrs Conlon in what she is promising for the children; I believe the dream can come true.

“I am looking forward to my daughter being a part of the school and for her to be well challenged to successfully pass her exams and be academically prepared to go to the university of her choice.

“I know Mrs Conlon can make this happen due to her passion and dedication to the young people of Harlow.”
Ms Hadzhieva is also attracted by the longer opening hours, plus Saturday school, to enable students to extend their learning opportunities.
