A love of reading at Stewards Academy
PUPILS at Stewards Academy are incredibly lucky to have access to an extremely well-stocked library with a dedicated Librarian and a Reading Manager. A large variety of books are available for pupils across all reading abilities.
All pupils in years 7 to 9 are enrolled in the Renaissance Reading scheme and complete a reading test called a star test. Pupils are then given a ‘book range’ so they know which books they will be able to read and understand. After reading the book a ‘Renaissance Reading ‘quiz is taken which assesses the student’s understanding of the book. In addition, pupils are given a Points Target for the term; points are earned through passing a quiz on the books when finished. This scheme has proven to greatly improve reading ability across all ages and all ability levels in the school.
Currently there are 1025 books on loan which shows almost all pupils have a book. Pupils in yr7-9 have already completed 360 quizzes and read 5.3 million words!
One of the key drivers each year is to ensure that all Stewards pupils develop and maintain a love of reading. To support this, the academy has three dedicated reading weeks during the year where a wide range of reading activities take place to encourage a love of literature. We choose a different theme for each such as ‘Poetry’, ‘Diaries’, and the all-time favourite ‘Harry Potter’. These include, author visits, competitions, and staff readings in the library.
So as not to miss out staff also have full access to a range of fiction, non-fiction and educational research books. Regular staff wellbeing sessions include reading in the relaxing surroundings of the library and participating in book discussions.
Clare Bailey, Reading Manager, said: “Our library is a popular place at break and lunch times, it is a welcoming environment where pupils can read or work. September was a great start to the year, years 7 and 8 all have at least one English lesson a week in the library giving pupils the opportunity to read and take quizzes.”
