Fresh opportunity to become an inspirational This Girl Can Essex ambassador

WOMEN and girls across Essex are being invited to join the successful This Girl Can Essex ambassadors programme to help inspire and motivate others to get active by showing them how exercise can be fun and sociable whatever their age or ability.

The programme, which is managed by the county’s sports partnership, Active Essex, already has over 170 ambassadors from all over Essex aged between 16 and 62 – but they are now reaching out for more to help with new initiatives in the coming year.

‘This Girl Can Essex’ is a localised programme of the award-winning national campaign spearheaded by Sport England. Since its launch in early 2017, This Girl Can Essex ambassadors have been involved in 10 ‘Women Like Us’ festivals and inspired hundreds of women around the county to find a sport or activity that suits them.

Applications are now open for the next wave of ambassadors to join the programme and inspire women in their local community to get active, meet new people and have fun – particularly in Tendring, Maldon, Castle Point, Rochford, Brentwood, Uttlesford, Harlow and Epping Forest.

There are no rigid time commitments to be an ambassador and you can get involved in 4 ways; whether you want to inspire by sharing your journey into activity, promote activities and opportunities, support the delivery of our ‘Women Like Us’ festivals or gain support from the Active Essex team if you deliver a sport – all are welcome! There is a Welcome Pack to get started.

Becky Scott aged 36 from Colchester blogs as part of her ambassador role, under the name ‘very hungry faterpillar’, she says; “I became an ambassador because I believe that as a 30 something ‘fattie’ who manages to find the time and confidence to shake my bootie (& enjoy it!) that I’d be the sort of person who could inspire others to get up and try it! I love being part of a positive community that inspires women and girls to embrace their bodies and enjoy movement.”

Working mum, teacher and avid runner Heidi Shubrook, aged 36 from Uttlesford says; “As a mum and teacher myself I want to encourage them into sport and activity. It is important even when life is 100 miles an hour to find a few hours a week to set aside for you. Exercise is so important for your health and wellbeing and I would love to inspire and encourage more women into sport.”

This Girl Can Essex ambassadors are involved in a huge range of sport and physical exercise including running, swimming, walking, weight and power lifting, wakeboarding, pole dancing, obstacle course training, hockey, burlesque dancing, roller derby and many more.

Hayley Chapman, relationship manager at Active Essex, said: “The role of the ambassadors is really important as it brings communities together. We understand that time can be a real pressure when trying to fit activity into your everyday life and we support the latest national campaigns #FitGotReal. Our ambassadors really help women see fitness as fun and attain the ultimate goal of maintaining a regular level of physical activity.

“At Active Essex, our ambition is to change 1 million lives by getting people in our county active and our This Girl Can Essex ambassadors have already inspired and motivated hundreds of women to achieve their goal.”

Is it just me? Or is calling women, some in their 60s ‘girls’ a little misogynistic and patronising?
