IF THERE was ever an event that encapsulated the community spirit of Harlow, then it was the return of Dr Ahmed Shakoor, to open up the new play equipment and garden dedicated to the memory of his family.

Dr Shakoor made a moving speech which was punctuated with the words, peace and love.

The event was led by the head teacher, Mrs Lynn and included kind speeches by the students. One student, overcome with emotion was comforted by the doctor.

Harlow MP, Robert Halfon was joined by Essex and Harlow Council representatives.

After the speech, the groups went to the garden where they cut the ribbon on a number of benches. The benches were the idea of Neil and Donna Betteridge, who have managed to raise £26,000 to pay for the installation of lasting memorials to the family in the grounds of the sshakoorchool.

Dr Shakoor’s wife Sabah Usmani (44) and children Hira (12), Sohaib (11), Muneeb (9), Rayyan (6) and Maheen (3) all lost their lives after fire ripped through their end-of-terrace home in the early hours of October 15.
