Syria: Stride backs Miliband on opposition to action

News / Fri 30th Aug 2013 am31 08:45am

PROSPECTIVE parliamentary candidate for Harlow (Labour) Suzy Stride has backed the decision by Labour leader Ed Miliband to oppose military action in Syria.

MPs rejected possible UK military action against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government to deter the use of chemical weapons.

David Cameron said he would respect the defeat of a government motion by 285-272, ruling out joining US-led strikes.

Labour’s Ed Miliband said US-UK ties could not simply be about doing what the American president says he wants.

Ms Stride said: “Ed Miliband was right to oppose David Cameron’s decision to support military action in Syria without knowing the full facts.

“We now have the opportunity to be part of an international diplomatic push to do all we can to support Syrian people.

“We need to stamp out the use of chemical weapons and we need the United Nations to bring real pressure on the malign forces operating in Syria.”
