Whatever happened to the council surgery?

Politics / Sun 13th Oct 2013 at 02:49pm

council3THIS WAS a question that a Harlow resident put to a councillor on Thursday night in Staple Tye.

Councillor Waida Forman told the resident that, although she was not his constituent, she had a surgery.

YH has to say that in the four months we have been running, we have seen a lot of cllr Forman.

But the question did get us thinking.

Unlike many councils, which publish details of councillors surgeries, Harlow do not.

So, we have been doing a little digging.

The three Church Langley councillors hold a walking surgery outside Tesco’s between 1pm and 4pm, every first Saturday of the month. YH has been up there and they are pretty busy.

Others think a little bit outside the box (or under the gazebo). Bush Fair and Harlow Common councillors prefer to walk and talk.

Recently, they had a number of gazebos around the wards, where residents could pop in and say hello. It was first used by the Harlow Lib Dems.

Many feel that sitting in a draughty hall once a month is somewhat outmoded and that there are better ways to communicate.

But we will endeavour to find out what the others are doing.

Like we said, in our first three months we have concluded that the vast majority of Harlow councillors are very busy and committed but there may be one or two who may need a bit of encouragement to raise their profile…..
