After St Jude: Be on the guard against rogue traders

ESSEX County Council’s trading standards team is warning people not to fall prey to rogue traders looking to take advantage of Monday’s (28 October) storm force winds across the town.

The council itself has been working to clear roads and paths and legitimate traders will also be carrying out work, but trading standards officers are concerned rogue traders will be trying to take advantage of the situation.

A spokesperson said: “Unscrupulous rogue traders are always on the lookout for ways of cheating people out of their money.

“We would urge everyone to take extra care about who they employ if they have damaged property, and to double check if somebody says you need work done.”

If your property has suffered any damage, trading standards advise people to speak to your insurance company before engaging anyone to carry out repairs and to never do business with cold-callers.

They would encourage anyone who has been targeted by cold callers to contact the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 08454 040506, or the Essex buy with confidence scheme to search for a trading standards-approved trader in their area by visiting www.essex.gov.uk/buywithconfidence or by calling 08454 040506.
