HARLOW Council has officially launched Harlow Shops Local, a campaign and website to promote the diverse range of small and independent businesses operating across the town.
Harlow Shops Local offers a dedicated website for businesses to advertise their products and services. Businesses are able to upload and manage their own online content as well as the opportunity to include special offers bespoke to Shops Local customers, encouraging residents to support small and independent businesses.
The launch coincides with ‘Small Business Saturday’, taking place on Saturday 7 December 2013. Traditionally one of the busiest shopping days of the year, Small Business Saturday is about encouraging everyone in the UK to support small businesses, both on the day and beyond and is the first time the campaign has run in the UK.
The way people shop and do business has changed dramatically over the years and, with the impact of internet shopping, small and independent businesses can sometimes find themselves lost when competing against national chains and the worldwide offering that the internet brings.
Iain Wicks, Essex Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) Development Manager, said: “The FSB has been running its Keep Trade Local campaign for some time now, and it’s good news that Harlow Council is launching its ‘Harlow Shops Local’ campaign on Small Business Saturday to support independent retailers which are a vital part of the local community and the driving force of every successful economy.”
Councillor Tony Durcan, Portfolio Holder for Resources and Enterprise, said: “Local small and independent businesses are a valuable part of our local economy, offering consumers both choice and a personalised service that national chains and the internet cannot offer.
“Harlow Shops Local has been created for local businesses, especially businesses that do not have their own web presence. It provides a free opportunity for businesses to promote and market their products and services, and encourages residents to support small business and shop locally.”
The website already includes a number of local small and independent businesses, but those not already listed are invited to register their business on the website.
