BUSINESSES from Harlow have been recognised by Essex County Council at a special celebration event.

The event, held at County Hall on Tuesday 14 January 2014 saw 27 businesses recognised for the support they have provided to the Essex Education and Industry STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) programme.

Since 2011 Essex County Council has worked with schools and local businesses to increase knowledge, participation and interest in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects and careers. This has been completed through a range of activities such as business visits, STEM extra curriculum clubs, work experience, mentoring and engagement activities.

During the event, businesses that have been involved in the programme were presented with their award by Cabinet Member for Education & Lifelong Learning Cllr Ray Gooding. Students from the schools involved were also present.

Cllr Gooding said: “I was delighted to help recognise so many local businesses who have given up their valuable time to be part of the STEM programme. It is extremely important for young people to learn about their options and different routes they can take in their careers. Working with businesses has given the young people involved the opportunity to interact directly with the experts in these fields.”

One business recognised at the event was GCS Alarms based near Clacton. Managing Director of the company Paul Dewing (Pictured), who has been actively involved in the programme, said: “The programme has been a fantastic opportunity for us to teach young people about the industry we are in.
