A NEW 20-bed ward has opened at Princess Alexandra hospital.

Costing £2.8 million, the new ward will serve as a short stay assessment unit attached to the A and E Department.

Work started just 10 weeks ago and the new ward will relieve pressures which build up on the hospital which operates at 95% capacity and often above that during the winter.

Chief Operating Officer, Jules Martin, said: “ It was great getting the money but it meant we really had to deliver and quickly. Everyone has stepped up to the mark and it will make a big difference in patient care.”

Ms Martin paid special tribute to patients for their understanding and forbearance, particularly with parking, during construction.

With construction complete some extra places will come back into use as building equipment is cleared.
