Athletics: Triumph for Murtagh in Twenty is plenty for Harlow Running Club

HARLOW Running Club’s Steve Murtagh collected two gold medals at the Essex 20 Mile Championships held over an undulating three lap course at Langham near Colchester.

Murtagh finished the race in 3rd place out of 452 finishers in an excellent 1hr 58min 53sec, but was the 1st Essex qualified runner and was therefore awarded the Open gold medal, as a Vet 40 he also won the gold medal in that category. Murtagh
becomes only the second HRC member to win the Essex 20 Mile Championships Open gold medal, the first being double winner Russell
Maddams in 2002 and 2003. Colin Moody 105th and 2nd Vet 60 won the silver medal in his category in 2hrs 32min 46sec, Julia Gardiner 120th and 3rd lady Vet 35 won the bronze medal in her category in 2hrs 35min 43sec and Sean Flynn 173rd finished in 2hrs 45min 52sec.

All the other HRC members were competing in their debut at the distance.

At the Finchley 20 Mile race Santosh Kumar finished in 458th place out
of 506 finishers in 3hrs 29min 06sec in his debut at the distance.

At the Roding Valley Half Marathon at Woodford Rick Ricketts finished
in 203rd place out of 654 finishers in a superb 1hr 46min 29sec and
Debbie Smith was 457th in 2hrs 04min 29sec.

At the Chelmsford Parkrun 5K Janice Page finished in 95th place out of
375 finishers and 2nd lady Vet 50 in a personal best time for the
distance of 23min 41sec followed by David Page 112th in 24min 34sec.

At the Gunpowder Parkrun 5K in Waltham Abbey Jason Haigh finished in
14th place out of 111 finishers in 21min 04sec followed by Celia Haigh
62nd in 27min 02sec.
