BUSINESSES in Harlow are being encouraged to help keep their workforce fit and healthy by taking place in the Workplace Challenge.
This national initiative is being delivered by Harlow Council, Active Harlow and Paringdon Sports & Social Club.
Active Harlow received funding from Active Essex to encourage businesses based in Harlow to promote sport, physical activity and healthy lifestyles to their employees. The Workplace Challenge is part of a national programme but also features countywide and local challenges as well as opportunities for employees to receive Workplace Champion training.
All employees need to do is register for free at www.workplacechallenge.org.uk and log their physical activity to be in with a chance of winning a host of prizes. A current Essex challenge is themed around the Tour de France; any cycling activity that is recorded from now until 7 July 2014 (when le Tour passes through Essex) will appear on a Tour de France Countdown Challenge leaderboard and anyone doing this will be entered into a spot prize draw. There will also be a countywide Walk to Work Challenge starting on 1 May 2014 to coincide with Walk to Work Month and Walk to Work Week (12-16 May 2014). Spot prizes will be awarded to individuals that save the most CO2 during the month of May.
Paringdon Sports & Social Club will be hosting a six-week, Harlow-specific challenge called The Active Harlow Workplace Challenge. The challenge will run from 7 May 2014 until 15 June 2014 and during this time employers will be asked to encourage staff to register and log their activity. Any activity logged from a Harlow employee during this time will appear on a Harlow-specific leaderboard. There will be a host of prizes up for grabs including full gym membership for three and six months, as well as social membership for a family and a range of sport, fitness and dance class vouchers from Paringdon Sports and Social Club. This challenge will culminate in a special one-off, fun event at Paringdon Sports & Social Club for the businesses that engaged in the six-week Harlow Challenge.
A Harlow Council spokesperson said: “As a partner of Active Harlow, the Council is proud to be promoting this project. The Active Harlow Workplace Challenge will promote healthy lifestyles to employees so it not only helps to work towards the Council’s wellbeing priorities but also contributes towards regeneration and a thriving economy. A workforce that is active and healthy is more productive and has higher levels of morale than one that is not so businesses are being encouraged to get on board and encourage their employees to be active”.
