£40,000 and rising: The shocking cost of the Harlow Gypsy-Traveller fiasco

Politics / Fri 18th Jul 2014 am31 08:03am

HARLOW COUNCIL admitted last night that the cost of “dealing” with the gypsy traveller problem in Harlow is now close to £40,000.

The information was revealed at a meeting of Harlow Council’s cabinet on Thursday night.

Old Harlow Conservative councillor, Joel Charles had tabled a specific question in relation to the costs incurred over 2014.

The figures were as follows: £8,000 on cleaning up.£2.450 on legal fees and then £28,000 on preventative measures.

The reality seems to be that until legislation is put in place by the government, then the hope that travellers can simply be moved on at a moments notice is not going to happen.

YH will be interviewing Harlow MP, Robert Halfon at lunchtime to assess his view of the matter.

We will continue to report this as rolling news as it is a matter of grave concern to residents.

Which of course does not include any officer time. So what's the real figure?

That's £40,000 this year alone - we still have a few months to go yet. How much has this cost over the last, say 10, years? We get these visitors every year now - time to put a stop to it.
