Athletics: Remarkable summer for Naomi

HARLOW AC athlete, Naomi Harryman, has already enjoyed a remarkable summer having already won a number of Essex titles at age group level, earned selection for county and school squads and gained her first international vest for the England Schools’ team. With the National Schools’ Championships and the team Heptathlon at the end of August to look forward to some athletes may well have chosen to be resting now.

Harryman, however, chose to put herself on the line at the Eastern Counties Senior Championships, held at The University Track, Cambridge last weekend. She was entered for both the High and Long Jumps but, still feeling the effects of the international from the previous weekend, opted to withdraw from the High Jump. She didn’t jump as far as she has done on previous occasions but 5.57m was good enough to secure gold and her first senior title. She is now in the top thirty nationally for all long jumpers and only three other U17 athletes appear on that list.

Speaking after the event Harlow AC coach Steve Lott said, “Many congratulations to Naomi, her coach and indeed her whole family. They are incredibly committed and have spent many hours on motorways and weekends in hotels and trackside in support of her. Naomi herself has foregone what many would consider to be a ‘normal’ teenage lifestyle. I am sure it will all be worth it as she has put herself in a position through her performances where further titles and international recognition must surely come. And, who knows where it might all lead?”
