MP Robert Halfon questions why Harlow Council did not apply for Gypsy-Traveller grant

HARLOW MP, Robert Halfon has questioned why Harlow Council have not applied for funding for extra Gypsy-Traveller pitches in the town.

In a letter to the council, Mr Halfon said:

“Further to your meeting with the Housing Minister, Brandon Lewis, on 11 August, the Homes and Communities Agency has been asked to write to you to set out our position in relation to bidding for funding to develop traveller site provision through the 2011-15 Traveller Pitch Funding programme, which we manage on behalf of Government.

“Through Traveller Pitch Funding the Government has made available up to £60million to local authorities, housing associations and other groups to support the development of good quality sites to help meet the accommodation needs of traveller communities, with the aim of delivery up to 900 new and improved pitches by the programmes close.

“At the time of writing, the Homes and Communities Agency has not received any formal applications for funding from Harlow Council or from Essex County Council to develop traveller site provision in Harlow.

“The Traveller Pitch Funding programme is now in its final year and will close on
31st March 2015 by when all funds must have been expended.

“Reflecting this timeframe and the time it normally takes to bring new proposals through to completion, bidding for new Traveller Pitch Funding allocations under the 2011-
15 programme has now closed.

“However, the Agency is continuing to support the development of new traveller
provision through the 2015-18 Affordable Homes programme. Bidding for this
funding is currently closed, however it is expected to be reopened for a further
Continuous Market Engagement (CME) bid round later in this year where there
will be a further opportunity to bid for this funding.

So you have to apply when you have no traveller problem for a grant that you may or may not need, but now when you do need it you cannot apply?! How wonderfully arse about face! Why call it something that suggests it's open til 2015 when it isn't? I have to say Robert you should have done your homework better than this!
