Mystery surrounds true cost of Harlow Playhouse

Politics / Tue 30th Sep 2014 at 10:34am

IN THE RECENTLY published consultation document regarding savings for Harlow Council, it stated that the cost of keeping the Harlow Playhouse open was in the region of £850,000.

A lot of money. A figure that, in some quarters, has been disputed.

So we thought we would ask a simple question. If it cost £850,000 to run, how much would they save by closing the 44-year-old theatre.

We made it multiple choice.

Is it:

A. £850,000
B. £250,000
C. £100,000
D. None of the above.

We asked the portfolio holder responsible but cllr Emma Toal but she told us that she was not involved in negotiations. Cllr Toal told us that it was deputy leader Tony Durcan. So, we asked cllr Durcan, the question.

Cllr Durcan replied: ” I wouldn’t like to just guess as it would depend on many factors: what would be basis of the closure, for how long, staffing issues, ticket refunds and refunds to acts already booked, securing the building etc.”

We are not sure if we are writing a little drama, mystery, farce or pantomime here but we think there is a definite line of inquiry……To be continued.
