Grants available for rural villages near Harlow

THE second round of funding for capital grants is now open until 16 December 2014. If your group is based in or providing services for people in rural East Herts and could do more for the local community with funding for building refurbishments, improvement projects or items of equipment, then you should consider applying to the council now.

Ten large and small capital grants in excess of £33,000 have already been awarded to rural community groups since April including Perry Green and Green Tye Society which received £1,100 to purchase a replacement marquee.

William Bird, Secretary of Perry Green and Green Tye Society said: “Our original Marquee was purchased in 2007 and has seen service in both summer and winter events. It has become an essential part of any village event. Our events are about community engagement and village preservation. The marquee is constantly used throughout the year at functions organised by the society, local fetes, church events and other organisations in the parish, its constant use means that it is now in a poor state of repair. We set about looking for a replacement and were advised by a local councillor that small capital grants may be available.

We contacted East Herts Council and were sent an application form, completion was easy and then it was just a matter of waiting. We were delighted to find that our application had been successful! The purchase of a new marquee will allow us to continue our community work and ensure that our events and those of our partners enjoy the security against the unpredictable English weather.”

Executive member for health, housing and community support, Councillor Linda Haysey said: “It’s wonderful to see residents of rural communities enjoying the benefits provided with grant funding. I’d urge other community groups to apply to the council as soon as possible if they have a good idea which they could get off the ground with help from a capital grant.”
