News / Wed 8th Oct 2014 at 03:52pm

THERE are only two weeks left to recognise local sporting heroes through the Active Essex Sports Awards 2014.

There is a wealth of sporting talent in Essex and now is your opportunity to nominate inspirational individuals within sport.

Cabinet member for Sport and Physical Activity, Cllr Ray Gooding said: “ Time is running out to get your nominations in for this year’s Active Essex Sports Awards. Don’t miss your chance to recognise someone for their commitment to sport.”

Chairman of Active Essex, Gary Sullivan OBE said: “We have so many passionate and talented people involved in sport throughout the county. These awards are a great way of recognising their dedication but the awards also help inspire others to get involved. So if you haven’t done so already, please make sure you nominate.

“We are looking for amazing people who are a true inspiration to sport and physical activity in greater Essex; from athletes to coaches, to volunteers, to organisations, to clubs, to teams to institutions. This is your opportunity to nominate those people that have made a significant difference to or through sport in Essex and give them the recognition that they deserve.”

The headline award sponsor this year is construction and infrastructure company Morgan Sindall and the categories are: Sports personality of the year – sponsored by Colchester United FC , Young sports personality of the year, Disabled sports personality of the year, Services to disability sport, Unsung hero (Volunteer) – sponsored by MRL Productions, Young volunteer (Under 18) – sponsored by Essex & Suffolk Water, Sports club of the year – sponsored by Wilson James, Coach of the year – sponsored by Holiday Inn, Basildon, Physical activity project of the year – sponsored by Fusion Lifestyle, School or college of the year and Active workplace of the year – sponsored by Writtle College.

Gavin Napper, Morgan Sindall area director, said: “We’re delighted to be supporting the Active Essex awards. This is a really positive scheme which plays an important role in promoting sports in the region and encouraging young people to live active, healthy lives. It’s been a pleasure to work alongside Essex County Council in getting behind the awards which celebrate the great sporting achievements of people across our region and we encourage people in Essex to get involved and put in their votes!”

The awards will take place in December at Colchester United Community Stadium. To nominate, please visit: www.activeessex.org/sportsawards. Nominations close on 20th October 2014.
