HARLOW MP, Robert Halfon has criticised Harlow Council after Marks and Spencer announced at lunchtime on Thursday, that they will be closing their Broad Walk store in Harlow.

A spokesperson for Marks and Spencer said: “We are disappointed by the outcome. We had indicated we would consult with our staff on the closure of the Broad Walk store and have spoken to our employees today.

“The decision to consult is not one we have taken lightly and it is our intention to offer redeployment options for all colleagues across the local area.”

Mr Halfon said: “This is a tragedy for Harlow. Over fifty jobs are at risk. I think the planning committee of Harlow Council made the wrong decision.

“I sat down with Marks and Spencers and did my best. I just hope that Marks and Spencers appeal.

“I am a realist and want jobs in this town. This was a big ticket company that is now leaving Harlow. What does this say for aspiration?”
