ActiveTHE Active Essex School Games mascot has been revealed for the first time to excited school children in Colchester.

During a special school assembly at St Teresa’s RC School, Colchester, pupils received a surprise visit from a life size walking, peacock designed by Year 4 student Alina Varghese. Alina won a competition to design a School Games mascot to be showcased at Essex events and celebrations.

Chair of Active Essex Gary Sullivan OBE said: “The School Games are a perfect example of the legacy that we aimed to deliver from the London 2012 Games by inspiring the next generation to realise their ambitions. I’m looking forward to seeing our mascot parading around upcoming Essex School Games events, sporting the School Games values on its’ feathers.”

Pupils and teachers cheered and waved as the life sized peacock walked in to shake hands with Alina and congratulate her on for her winning design.

Alina said: “I never thought I would win, I just wanted my design to stand out and be bright and colourful. It was exciting to see it for real.”

Headteacher, Mrs Frances Booker said: “The children looked amazed as the life size peacock greeted them during their special assembly. It was an honour to be the first to meet the new mascot and we are very proud of Alina for making this happen. Alina’s winning design reflected her cultural heritage, with the idea of using a peacock coming from a recent visit to India. It also clearly illustrates the school games values which the children could all easily identify with. This was a great finale to an inspirational talk from Paralympian Hannah Stodel, who provided some further examples of what the school games values meant to her and her team, in sport and throughout their lives.”

The competition came about to promote and bring the spirit of the School Games to life and promote the School Games values: courage, determination, honesty, passion, respect, self-belief, team work. Not only do the mascot’s beautiful peacock feathers perfectly display these values, but the peacock is also inspired by Alina’s Indian heritage, illustrating how the excitement of sporting events can inspire everybody to strive to be the best they can be at what they do.
