ACTIVE Essex is reminding local clubs and groups in Harlow to apply for Sportivate funding before time runs out.
The Sportivate funding, from Sport England, invests national lottery funds into projects designed to create a sporting legacy from the London 2012 Games by engaging and retaining more young people aged 11-25 in sport and physical activity. In Essex £1.5 million is being invested over a six year period.
Sportivate gives young people the chance to discover a sport that they love through funding local clubs, coaches and leisure providers to engage young people in taster session courses, with the aim of retaining them in the activity after the course.
The funding has already had a huge impact in Essex, having successfully delivered over 650 projects to over 15,300 young people through sports clubs and coaches, national governing bodies of sport, local authority sports development officers, schools, colleges and universities in a variety of alternative and mainstream sports.
Chairman of Active Essex, Gary Sullivan OBE said: “Sportivate is a fantastic incentive for young people to get into sport and be more active. At Active Essex, we are committed to delivering a legacy from 2012 by providing more sporting opportunities for young people and we are very proud of the positive impact that Sportivate has already had on our participants. I urge more people to continue to take advantage of this legacy fund. ”
Cabinet member with responsibility for Sport & Physical Activity, Cllr Ray Gooding said: “Don’t miss out on this latest opportunity to inspire our young people to do sport and physical activity. Visit the website and apply before the deadline of 16th January 2015.”
Active Essex is now inviting applications for Sportivate funding for projects to run between April and September 2015.
A recent success story is 17-year-old Janie Banks who benefitted from Sportivate-funded sessions provided by Orca Scuba Diving Academy in Basildon. Janie was named as the Eastern Region Sportivate Participant of the Year in 2014. Read more about Janie’s story here>>
For those looking to apply the key criteria are:

– Participants between 11 and 16 will only be considered where there is a clear opportunity and strong connection to continued community-based activity (ie outside of school)
– Participants should currently have a low engagement with sport or physical activity, ie less than four times per month.
Application deadline is January 16th 2015.
