Statement from Essex Police

ONE woman remains in hospital for treatment to serious but non-life threatening injuries following a five vehicle collision on the M11 yesterday.

The road was fully re-opened at 7.20pm. The incident had taken place at 12.50pm on the Southbound carriageway of the M11 just prior to junction six with the M25.

Investigations indicate that the crash occurred in slow moving traffic on the approach to the slip road. There was an initial collision between a Nissan Micra and a Skoda Octavia, before a Volkswagen Passat then collided with a Ford Mondeo and a Ford Fusion. All the vehicles were travelling on the M11 towards London.

Eight people were taken to the Royal London, Whipps Cross and Basildon Hospitals for treatment. All but one of the casualties has now been released following treatment.

The M11 was closed for six and a half hours causing significant disruption for travellers. Officers at the Chigwell Road Policing Unit are appealing for any witnesses to this serious collision to contact them on 101.

M11 Essex – Very slow traffic on M11 southbound between J7, A414 (Harlow) and J6 M25, because of an accident earlier on. All lanes have been re-opened. Congestion to J8, A120 (Bishops Stortford).

Update on traffic situation

1. M11 closed and queuing traffic for ten miles southbound between J7, A414 (Harlow) and J6 M25, because of a multi-vehicle accident and recovery work. Diversion in operation – via A414 through Chipping Ongar, heading onto the A113 which rejoins the M11 at Junction 5. Congestion to just after J8.

2. Queuing traffic for four miles on B1393 London Road southbound between Harlow in Epping Forest and the B182 Bury Lane junction in Epping.

Update: 1745 hrs

One of the three lanes of the southbound carriageway of the M11 is now open again following a serious road traffic collision just before 1pm today.

Tailbacks currently stand at around eight miles but cars are slowly getting through.

Three people have been taken to hospital for treatment to serious injuries.

Police remain at the scene carrying out investigations and the vehicles involved in the collision are awaiting recovery.

M11 remains closed J7-J6, serious accident.

11 mile tailbacks reported, with Qs to J9.

Update: 1550 hrs: Police statement

The southbound M11 has been closed at junction seven following a serious injury road traffic collision on the carriageway between junctions seven and six.

All three emergency services are at the scene following reports coming in shortly before 1pm today of a multiple vehicle collision.

It is believed that people in two cars have suffered serious injuries in the incident.

The Highways Agency has been informed and diversions are being put in place. The southbound carriageway is likely to remain closed for several hours.

Update: 1525 hrs

Greater Anglia: Due to a road traffic incident on the M11 in the Harlow area, delays of 50 mins will occur to Stansted Express. Bus replacement services.

Further diversion advice

Traffic to exit at Junction 7, and take first exit onto A414 towards Chelmsford.
Continue untill you reach Writtle, and take A414 towards the A12 (southbound / london-bound).
Join the A12 londonbound at Junction 15 (of A12).
Join the M25 anti-clockwise at Junction 28 to rejoin M11 south from Junction 25 (of M25)
