THE total amount of Council Tax Harlow residents will pay from April 2015 has been set.
Harlow Council’s share of the Council Tax will increase by 1.5 per cent which is an extra 7p a week or £3.64 a year for a Band “C” home.

Harlow Council collects Council Tax on behalf of Essex County Council, the Essex Police & Crime Commissioner and Essex Fire Authority. Seventeen per cent of the bill goes to Harlow Council with 70 per cent going to Essex County Council, nine percent to Essex Police and four percent going to Essex Fire Authority.

Council Tax bills for 2015/16 will be sent out to households next month.

In Harlow there are around 36,000 households which pay Council Tax. Nearly 80 per cent of households in Harlow are in the lower Council bands A to C.

Councillor Jon Clempner, Leader of Harlow Council, said: “The money raised by increasing our share of Council Tax by 1.5% will be used to pay Essex County Council to keep the town’s street lights on all night.

“Council Tax isn’t the only source of funding for Harlow Council services, we also receive Government grants, which continue to reduce, along with a share of business rates and income from services.

“Although Harlow Council collects Council Tax we only keep a small proportion of the total amount. Out of every £100 of Council Tax collected in Harlow only £17 goes towards services provided by Harlow Council. For the average Council Tax payer in Harlow the weekly cost for Harlow Council services is just £4.50.

“This helps provide services to over 83,000 people and gives funding towards services like waste and recycling collections, street cleaning, maintenance of parks and open spaces, environmental health, licensing, playgrounds and grant aid to local groups.”

Same old story - Labour Council - up goes the Council Tax! This time to give their Parliamentary Candidate her own so called victory! I see Jon Clempner is churning out the same stuff every Labour Council Leader does. Remember all 3 parties wrote to Essex CC saying we want the street lights back on - but only Labour expects Residents to pay twice for a service they should have BY RIGHTS!
