Harlow Council leader: “Street lights offer still very much on the table”

Politics / Wed 25th Mar 2015 at 11:42am

THE Leader of Harlow Council has stated today (25 March 2015) that Harlow Council’s offer to keep street lights on all night in Harlow is still very much on the table despite Essex County Council’s change of mind in keeping the lights on an extra hour on some days across Essex.

Yesterday (24 March 2015), Essex County Council announced that it will change the hours part-night lighting is operated across Essex to 1am to 5am six days a week from next Monday (30 March 2015) costing the County Council £300,000 a year.

Councillor Jon Clempner, Leader of Harlow Council, said: “I am pleased that the Essex County Council’s position has shown that there can be some flexibility in responding to local needs. I now look forward to Essex County Council going the next step and accepting Harlow Council’s offer to pay to keep the street lights on all night in Harlow.”

“This change of mind by Essex County Council does not affect Harlow Council’s offer to pay to keep street lights on all night in Harlow. Harlow Council’s offer is still very much on the table and discussions continue to take place at a high level with the Leader of Essex County Council.

A separate report is expected by Essex County Council considering requests from District Councils in Essex offering to pay for lights to be kept on. As I said last week, when Cllr Bass outlined his current position, this isn’t the end of the matter. We will continue to talk to Essex County Council. We will continue to put our community’s needs first and seek to get our town’s street lights back on.”

“If at 1 April 2015, when the new Council Tax levels for 2015/16 come into effect, Essex County Council has still not agreed to respond to the wishes of Harlow residents and the democratic decision of Harlow Council, the money for street lighting from the 1.5 per cent rise will continue to be protected. The Council will continue to fight to get the lights back on in Harlow.”
