Local residents and community groups are being encouraged to mark the 70th anniversary of VE Day.

FRIDAY 8 May 2015 is the anniversary of VE Day (Victory in Europe Day), marking 70 years since the end of the second world war in Europe. Celebrations will take place across the Country on Friday 8 May, and across the weekend of 9 and 10 May 2015.

The Council’s Leah Manning Centre will be holding a day time street party themed event on Friday 8 May for their users. On the evening of 8 May Harlow Royal British Legion will holding a BBQ for its veterans with music from the era and the lighting of a beacon as part of a chain of beacons across the country.

Residents, residents’ associations and community groups are being encouraged to mark the occasion by holding events or street parties during the three days of celebration.

Street parties are a traditional way of celebrating occasions like this and bring neighbours together to mark landmark events. They are easy to organise and a useful online guide to street parties can be found on the Council’s website at www.harlow.gov.uk/street-parties
