Lollipop patrol vacancies in Harlow

Communities / Sun 31st May 2015 at 10:54am

ESSEX County Council is recruiting school crossing patrol officers across the county to fill vacancies at established crossings.

Gerry Low has been a crossing patrol officer for almost 11 years, the last three on patrol at Spital Road, Maldon, for pupils at All Saints’ C of E Primary School.

At the grand age of 84, Gerry loves getting out of the house in the morning to hit the road with his lollipop.

He said: “One of the best things is getting to know the children and their families. A mum told me once that her little boy had said to her ‘If the lollipop man doesn’t turn up one day does the school have to close?’ That says it all, doesn’t it?

“It’s one of those jobs you get so attached to. I often think to myself at my age I’m not having another winter of that, but one way or the other I turn up. If I didn’t enjoy it I wouldn’t do it, would I?”

Gerry works 8.15am to 9am and 3.15pm to 3.45pm. Essex County Council keeps him comfortable and warm with hats, jackets, gloves, wellies and socks supplied as part of the job.

Essex County Council Cabinet Member for Highways Maintenance and Small Schemes, Cllr Eddie Johnson, said: “These are important vacancies to fill for the community and we encourage members of the community to apply.”

The purpose of the job is to help children, parents and other people across the road at designated times of day, during school term time only.

There are vacancies all over the county:

Chelmsford: 3 vacancies
Basildon: 1 vacancy
Thorpe-le-Soken: 1 vacancy

Waltham Abbey: 1 vacancy
