Southern Way HarlowA new mini roundabout is set to improve traffic flow into Harlow Town.

Work to remove the existing traffic lights at the Southern Way and Tawney’s Road junction and replace them with a mini roundabout is scheduled to begin on Sunday, July 27.

The project will improve traffic flow and reduce journey times at the busy intersection, which is one of the major links in and out of Harlow.

Expected to take six weeks to complete, the scheme is being funded by the Harlow Local Highways Panel.

Essex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways, Maintenance and Small Scheme Delivery, Cllr Eddie Johnson, said: “Improving Southern Way into Harlow is a priority and a key element of transforming the town’s economic fortunes.”

While the work is being carried out, traffic on Southern Way will be controlled by temporary three-way signals. Tawney’s Road will remain closed throughout.

Two night time road closures will be required on Southern Way on Sunday, July 27, to dismantle the existing lights and Sunday, August 16, to allow carriageway resurfacing and lining work. Motorists will be directed onto a diversion route using sections of Tilliwick’s Road, Second Avenue, Third Avenue and Abercrombie Avenue.

Cllr Johnson added: “There will inevitably be disruption caused during the work. However, as the major elements are being undertaken on Sundays when the full diversion routes will be in place, it will be kept to a minimum.”
