HARLOW MP, Robert Halfon has given a detailed response to the growing “refugee crisis” that is facing the UK and the rest of Europe.

Mr Halfon said: “This tragedy is occurring because of terrorism, poor country economies and evil Regimes in the Middle East and Africa.

Great Britain is one of the most compassionate countries in the world.

“I am proud that the Government have already taken in 5,000 Syrian‎ Refugees and that we have a proud history of offering asylum to those who need it.

It is also worth noting ‎that Britain has one of the longest running and largest refugee resettlement schemes in the EU, in partnership with the UN and spends many billions on our Overseas Aid Budget.

We have been at the forefront of the international response to the humanitarian crisis in Syria – including as the second biggest bilateral donor of humanitarian aid.

Britain has already spent over £900 million on the region to help alleviate this tragedy, with £420‎ million spent on Syria alone.

‎Although it is also an established principle of international law that people in need of protection should claim asylum in the first safe country they reach – and that country must take responsibility for processing those claims‎, it is right that the Government is working closely with the United Nations and European Union to deal with this human tragedy

The only real way to address the flow of economic migrants and refugees crossing continents is to break the link between getting into boats and settling in Europe.

“I welcome that, through our financial assistance, Britain is focusing on stabilising the countries from which the migrants are coming. This regional solution is the only sustainable way to address the flow of migrants crossing continents, rather than relocating people to Europe.
