AN air of mystery surrounds a crowdfunding project for a Harlow property developer’s latest book.

Last week, an article appeared in the Harlow Star which detailed how Cambridge-based Ajay Ahuja hoped to raise £500 through a crowdfunding website called Kickstarter.

The book was called Beyond Vengeance and centred around the life of a young Harlow drug dealer.

Mr Abuja told the Star that he was born and raised in Harlow and had great ambition for the book, perhaps even seeing it as a film one day.

But when YH reporters went onto the Kickstarter website, it revealed that the project had been “suspended.”

We contacted Kickstarter and asked them why this was so? They did not make specific reference to Mr Abuja’s project but signposted to us to their list of possible reasons.

They are:

A project may be suspended if our Integrity team uncovers evidence that it is in violation of one or more of Kickstarter’s rules, including:

— Misrepresentation of support, through self-pledging

— Misrepresentation or failure to disclose relevant facts about the project or its creator

— The creator provides inaccurate or incomplete user information to Kickstarter or one of our partners

— The characteristics of the creator account overlap with the characteristics of backer accounts that pledged to their project

— A party related to the creator is posing as an independent, supportive party in project comments or elsewhere

— The creator is presenting someone else’s work as their own

— The creator is offering purchased items, claiming to have made them

Projects may also be suspended if they chose to ‘Launch Now’ but, on closer inspection, do not fall within our rules.

A suspension is irreversible.

This is not the first time that Mr Abuja has been at the centre of controversy. The property developer’s business dealings have been the subject of a number of television items over the last few years including Sky News and the BBC.

Attempts to contact Mr Abuja have been unsuccessful at the time of publication.
