BOSSES at Princess Alexandra Hospital (PAH) have welcomed the government report that has told them that they “Require Improvement”

A spokesperson said: “We welcome the CQC report and are grateful for their recognition of the capacity difficulties facing the Trust that have led to both staffing and bed shortages, as well as issues in Outpatients. Some of the actions we have already taken to address the concerns identified, include:

• A concerted recruitment and retention drive that has led to a significant increase in the number of new nurses joining the Trust, with a further 200 expected in the coming months

• Working with our commissioners and social care partners to create facilities in the community to ease pressure within the hospital. This has included enhancing the Hospital at Home model that will significantly improve staff and patient safety

• A considerable increase in the number of nurses in Outpatients, an additional 400 outpatient clinics since August, and the option for patients to be seen and treated elsewhere in order to reduce waiting times. We have also just completed several months of rigorous checks to identify and follow up every patient awaiting treatment and these checks are ongoing to ensure that every patient is seen in a timely way.

• Intensive training and follow-up checks to ensure awareness among all our staff of existing Trust guidance around end of life care, as well as the appointment of additional specialist staff to support end of life care

• The introduction of a state-of-the-art swipe-out security and surveillance system in the Maternity and Children’s wards.

We appreciate the CQC’s recognition of the deep-rooted culture of care and compassion that runs throughout the organisation, as well as our many areas of excellence, including the ‘Outstanding’ awarded to the care given by our maternity and gynaecology staff. We are never complacent however and will continue to work hard to address the issues raised by the CQC as well as replicate the good and outstanding areas of practice they found throughout the Trust.
