Need for more housing in East Herts

PROVIDING more one and two bedroom homes, more suitable housing for the increasing population of older people and addressing the under-occupation of existing homes in the district are some of the key recommendations from a recent report approved for use by the Executive at East Herts Council.

A Housing Survey of over 9,000 households across 17 sub-areas in the district was carried out in October 2014 by housing, planning and regeneration consultants DCA. The council commissioned the survey to help understand the future nature and level of housing demand.

Executive member for health and wellbeing Eric Buckmaster said: “These are interesting and challenging times and this report is extremely comprehensive. As well as feeding this information into the District Plan, it will help us to increase our understanding of the existing housing stock so we can work to address imbalances. We’ll also continue to work with housing providers to ensure they’re aware of the housing needs of East Herts and are building new homes to address these needs.”

The Executive approved the survey for publication and the council will use the information to guide the emerging housing strategy 2016-21.
