PHE is holding a second three-day public exhibition, 6th-8th October, in Harlow Leisurezone to unveil its latest plans for a public health science hub.

The first exhibition in May revealed outline plans for the £400m project to redevelop the vacant GSK (GlaxoSmithKline) site at the New Frontiers Science Park to create a centre of excellence for research, health improvement and protection.

The New Frontiers Science Park (within Pinnacles Industrial Estate) was established in 1997 after investment and expansion by Beechams and later GSK.

The PHE proposals include keeping existing buildings and developing new research facilities and offices within a campus setting. It is proposing to reuse and refurbish four of the existing buildings created by GSK to provide up to 64,000 m2 of floor space in the retained buildings.

Several other buildings and structures will be demolished to make way for the proposed development. Initial proposals provide up to 56,000 m2 of new floor space, including 9,000 m2 for future expansion.

PHE expects to submit an outline planning application to Harlow Council in mid 2017. Completion of the development is pencilled for 2024.

Public Health England (PHE) chief executive Duncan Selbie said: “The plans have changed from the first exhibition based a great deal on the feedback we have received. We’d encourage as many people as possible to attend the event in October to help us take it to the next stage.”
