Senior management cuts to Essex Council

£800,000 of savings could be made through proposals for a restructure of Essex County Council’s Senior Management Team.

Speaking following Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting, Chief Executive Gavin Jones said his ambition for the authority was to have a more streamlined structure, but one which was better able to meet the challenges of achieving the County Council’s vision for Essex.

Under the proposals, there would be nine fewer senior posts, saving the authority £800,000 a year.

Once the restructure is complete, a further restructure of the wider organisation is planned.

Leader of the Council Cllr David Finch said: “The new structure will see more emphasis put on to those commercial elements of the council which we will be reliant on over the coming years, and also digital, which we know we need to embed more into our work.

“At the same time many of the services that we deliver have a huge impact on people’s lives, especially areas such as social care and children’s services, and it is absolutely right that these areas continue to be a priority. This is reflected in the proposed structure.”

Gavin Jones added: “These changes are about ensuring we create a flexible management team that is well placed to meet the challenges ahead.

“Since I started at the Council in January I have been struck by how well run our services are. But speaking to employees and also partner organisations and members of the public, it’s clear we need a more straightforward structure and I believe these proposals address these issues.”

Considering Essex County Council have the second highest number of Officers paid more than the Prime Minister of all the Councils in the Country - 30! - then this reduction is clearly long overdue. Heavens knows how they have justified this massive expense to Essex taxpayers for so long is beyond me!
