MP Liam Byrne met Harlow Councillor Ian Beckett, and ADAS’s Chair of Trustees Susan Cross and Chief Executive Gareth Clement, to talk about the Children of Alcoholics Manifesto and to learn more about ADAS’s vital work supporting children and families. Liam Byrne, who is MP for Birmingham Hodge Hill, was brought up in Harlow and his own father battled addiction. He praised the work of ADAS, saying:

“The Manifesto for Children of Alcoholics has been an important step in setting out what needs to be addressed if children of alcoholics are to be properly supported. We can learn a lot from organisations like ADAS on how best to support children and families affected by alcoholism. For a start we need to normalise being able to talk about this issue and promote local services like ADAS, which has been doing great work in the community for almost thirty years”
Gareth Clement, ADAS Chief Executive commented:

“It is important for ADAS to engage in this debate and support the manifesto launched by Liam Byrne MP. The effects that alcoholism has on children and family life are not widely understood and it is still a taboo subject. The manifesto will help to kick-start the debate and much needed change.
“ADAS provides a specialist service for children and family members affected by a parent, carer or loved one’s alcohol or substance misuse. We provide 1:1 play therapy for children, and couples and family therapy sessions. We work with around 40 children and 100 parents or carers every year.”
