North Weald Bassett Parish Council presents Citizen of the Year awards

A man who has written a book charting the history of Thornwood and who is described as “a keen supporter of everything that goes on in the village” has received North Weald Bassett Parish Council’s Citizen of the Year award.

Jimmy Waters helps at the Thornwood Village Festival and the gardening club.

He recently set about finding and refurbishing all the milestones around the parish, and produced a leaflet.

He has also recently completed a book about Thornwood with the publication described by the parish council as “a wonderful achievement, illustrating what the village is like”.

Four runners-up awards were also presented at the council’s Annual Parish Assembly at The Parish Hall, Thornwood.

* Viv Madden was recognised for her 30-year spell as secretary of North Weald Horticultural Society. She is retiring from the role this year.

* Kevin Hobden was nominated for his work assisting the parish council, including his swift response to flood damage at the parish council office at North Weald Library last June.

* Margaret Mulliner and Daphne Buckley were nominated for their help with the planting at the new garden outside the parade of shops in the High Road. Some 150 winter pansies were planted at the garden before Christmas.

* Laura Chalcraft was nominated for her work as a Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator.

* A Lifetime Contribution Award was presented to Arthur Moreton for his work with the Royal Air Force Association and North Weald Airfield.

* The Group Award was presented to Epping Forest Countrycare for its work at Thornwood Nature Reserve and Weald Common.

* An Exceptional Valour Award will be presented to Stanley, a 16-month-old dog who alerted his owners to a fire in the loft of their North Weald home last December.

Stanley woke his owners who fled the property, along with Stanley and a new puppy, shortly before the fire took hold.

His nomination stated: “Stanley’s senses obviously detected the heat and smoke so early and his intelligence on raising the alarm and saving them all definitely deserves recognition.”
