Penguins 2

THE Harlow Penguins Swimming Club delivered another outstanding performance in the 2017 East Region Swimming Championships. The top swimmers from across Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and a number of London Boroughs compete in this competition which is just one level down from the British Swimming Championships. 29 Harlow Penguins qualified for this year’s Regional Championships, up from 21 qualifiers in 2016.

There were some strong performances from the squad with a total of 11 medals being won. Carys Brealey won an impressive five medals (Gold in the 100m Backstroke, Silver in the 50m Backstroke and Bronze medals in the 50m, 100m and 200m Freestyle). Carys also finished third overall in the 13 years age group (on points accumulated across all events). Alessandro Rioda had a great championships, winning four medals (Silver in the 50m Freestyle and 200m Individual Medley along with two Bronze medals in the 50m and 100m Butterfly). Georgina Pryar won a Bronze in the 100m Butterfly and Celeste Andrew also won a Bronze in the 50m Butterfly. Ethan Pierce, Ellie Cronin, Tyler Jackson, Lee Baker, Hayden Thomas and Jack Mansfield qualified for the finals in their events, all of which are terrific achievements at this level.

These successes follow on from a strong showing at the Essex County Championships earlier this year and the recent sponsorship deal signed with Harlow based Custom Lofts. The Penguins continued success stems, at least in part, from their ability to develop talent from a very young age up through their Swim School and the subsequent Academy, Development and Performance Squads.
