Cricket: Down to the wire for Harlow CC

HARLOW Cricket Club 1st XI go into to next weekends final game of the season knowing that a win against joint bottom side South Woodford CC and with results in other matches going in their favour could keep them up. Currently sitting on 157 points same as fellow strugglers South Woodford with third bottom side Gidea Park and Romford on 174 points who have to play promotion chasing Billericay. With 25 points up for grabs for a team batting first and winning or 20 if batting second Harlow could overtake both sides provided Gidea Park lose and do not pick up enough bonus points in their fixture. If this happens expect to hear the Great Escape Theme tune blasting out from the pavilion at Harlow CC Saturday night.

Harlow CC 1st XI 187 all out lost to Hadleigh & Thundersley 1st XI 188-7

Having won the toss Hadleigh who currently top the league opted to put Harlow into bat. Harlow got off to a steady start with Hafiz Yawar Afzal scoring 48 before being bowled, fellow opener Ahmed Khawaja went for 21. Two more wickets fell with A Jones and R Ahmed going for 6 and 5 respectively. The only batsman to show much resistance after this was Ubaid Ur Rehman Kiani who scored 61 before being caught. Mustanser Meraj scored 22 and Mitch Howarde 16 and that was it. Harlow where bowled out for a total of 187 off 45.2 overs. In reply the two openers of Hadleigh Paul Tibbenham(19) and Oliver Smith(10) fell early and then two more for a duck and just 10 tens and things where looking up for Harlow at this point. In came middle order batsman Sam Hadley(47) and Luke Smith(53) who then started to take the game away from Harlow. Try as they might they could not find the break through required and take the wickets to win the match and Hadleigh reached required total of 188 for lose of 7 wickets. Mustanser Meraj took 3-41 and Mitch Howarde 2-47.

Hadleigh & Thundersley 2nd XI 97 all out lost to Harlow 2nd XI 101-0

Harlow 2nd XI playing bottom side Hadleigh ended any relegation fears by dispatching them with ease. Having won the toss they put Hadleigh into bat and this turned out to be a success. Of bowling of Lewis Aldred the opener went with score at 15, and he soon added a 2nd wicket and five more soon fell to leave Hadleigh on 61-7, with a five wicket haul in here for Lewis Aldred who finished with figures of 5-20 off 10 overs. Wickets continued to fall and Hadleigh were bowled out for just 97. Danny Stone finishing with 4 wickets for 42 runs. In reply Harlow did not lose a wicket with openers Conor Ramsey 57 n.o and Dipendra Basnet 33 n.o getting the victory in 22.2 overs for a convincing win.

In the other two matches featuring the 3rd and 4th XI, Harlow 3rd XI batting first against Upminster 3rd XI were bowled out for just 71 runs with only opener Asad Aleem Baig(33) getting into double figures, next top scorer was extras with 9 such was it a bad day. In reply Harlow did take five wickets with Soulat Ali having figures of 4-16 as Upminister finished on 72-5. The result leaves 3rd XI in midtable. Harlow CC 4th XI playing Upminister 4th XI bowled first. Upminster scored 221-8 from inning, wickets for Ilhan Mustafa 3-77 and Jake Hitematshah 2-44. In reply batting Harlow 4th XI scored 168-9. Top scorer with bat was Mashood Iqbal with 47 and Ilhan Mustafa with 32. The result means 4th XI just misses out on promotion.
