It’s official – singing is good for you!

IT’S a fact that singing can boost both your physical and mental health. Try typing “Singing is good for you” into Google, and up pop numerous websites verifying this statement. Add to this the return of the choir as a popular pastime, and you have the perfect antidote to the stresses and strains of modern life.

There are lots of different kinds of choirs, both amateur and professional. Some expect very high levels of knowledge and experience, but others – such as community choirs – welcome everyone and anyone. And the good news is, there’s a community choir right here in Harlow. What’s more, the choir is opening its doors to prospective new members with a free come-and-sing session in Old Harlow during the evening of Wednesday 6th September.

HARLOW Community Choir was formed in September 2012 by its musical director Sarah Wiggins, and is open to everyone aged 18-plus who loves singing, regardless of experience or ability to read music. If you’ve always fancied singing in a choir but think you’re not ‘good enough’ or that you’re ‘tone deaf’, this is the choir for you! The emphasis is firmly on having fun and making music in the process. Here are some comments about the choir from current members:

“I like singing and it is a chance for me to be myself as an individual. It gets me out of the house to a place where I can meet new people. I enjoy learning new songs, joining in, being part of a fun group of people who enjoy a laugh and help each other.”
“The evenings are such fun. The choir has a great inclusiveness about it and from day one of joining I’ve been made to feel very welcome.”

“I enjoy coming to choir as I enjoy singing.  I am a bit shy when I don’t know anyone but the people are very friendly.”

“I really enjoy the choir. I’ve never sang a solo before as most musical directors in my experience only ever choose the very best voices but you help us all to feel that all our individual voices help to contribute to the overall sound.”

“As a very new member I felt warmly welcomed on the first night.  The singing is lively, friendly and there’s a real buzz among the group.  Lots of laughter and even my feeble efforts are praised.”

“This choir has literally been a life saver for me after losing my partner.”

The choir rehearses in Old Harlow every Wednesday evening during termtime. For more information or to register for the free come-and-sing session on Wednesday 6th September, please email [email protected] or call 07503 918030.
