Sit Down

TWO senior Harlow Labour councillors delivered a snub to the retiring chief executive of Harlow Council by refusing to join in on a standing ovation in a council meeting.

Chief executive Malcolm Morley OBE was presented with a civic honour for his 14 years of service at the head of Harlow Council.

Warm valedictory speeches were made by the leaders of Labour, Conservative and Ukip.

After the honour was bestowed and Mr Morley made an acceptance speech, the councillors and the audience rose to give a warm and emotional stranding ovation to Mr Morley, who steps down in October.

All bar two. Left wing councillors, Mike Danvers and Danny Purton, both stayed firmly rooted to their chairs.

YH asked the councillors why they remained seated.

Cllr Purton said: “I may get accused of many things but I am not a hypocrite.”

The protest can be seen at the 15 min mark of film.
