Statement from Robert Halfon on Homelessness in Harlow

“I really welcome the incredible efforts of Streets2Homes and the Chocolate Run, both of which I have visited a number of times. The work that they do is extraordinary.

I am delighted at the good news announced earlier this year from Sajid Javid, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government. Together with other targeted areas in Essex, Harlow will be receiving £891,300 as part of the Government’s Homelessness Prevention Trailblazers scheme.

This funding is for local authorities to try out new initiatives and expand their homelessness prevention work to a wider group of people. They will be able to target families and individuals who they believe to be at risk so that they can stop them being made homeless in the first place.

On top of this £891,000, Harlow Council will receive an additional £136,178 of Government funding to implement new guidelines from the Homelessness Reduction Act.

The Act sets out the steps that local authorities should take into account when providing support to people who are homeless.

I’m pleased that the secretary of State for Communities and Local Government will be visiting Harlow in a couple of weeks time. I will continue to do all that I can to support the local homelessness charities we have in Harlow as well as getting support from the Government.”
