National U20 Combined Events Indoor Championships, Sheffield 6/7 Jan 2018 and Southern Counties Indoor Championships, Lee Valley 7 Jan.

HARLOW Athletes Beth Harryman and Leo Chaschin competed in the pentathlon and heptathlon respectively in Sheffield.

Beth had a very decent weekend achieving a PB total of 3136 points. She began her weekend with the 60m hurdles and ran a new PB in 9.75s. Her second event was the high jump; in which she achieved 1.62m, close to her best of 1.65m. Her morning ended positively with another new PB, this time in the Shot. The distance was 10.23m. Feeling a knee niggle, her afternoon events were a little off her usual pace. A long jump of 5.15m was decent enough but not as long as she would have hoped for. Her day ended with the 800m in a time of 2.46.0 mins.

Leo, who was making his first appearance at a national level event, scored 3850 points only 134 points off the score that got him to the finals originally. Day One began with 60m hurdles, which he completed in 10.04s. Unfortunately, he clipped a hurdle in warm up and was hampered by soreness throughout the rest of the competition. He followed this up with a long jump of 6.06m and managed to break 6m twice in his series of jumps. He then moved on to the shot and he pushed the 6k weight out to 7.87m. His next event was pole vault and he jumped a very solid 3.28m.

Day Two got under way with the 60m and he ran 7.75s. High jump came next and he was close to his 1.80m best as he went over 1.77m. His weekend ended with the 1 kilometre run and he set a new PB of 2.56.8 minutes.

Meanwhile, at Lee Valley, Jamie Putt ran the U 17 800m at the Southern Counties Indoor Championships. With a number of withdrawals this event became a straight final of 8 athletes. It was a quick race and Jamie had to run a PB to be in contention. He duly did so, running the distance in 2.05.44 minutes, taking the bronze medal in the process; his first major medal at a national level.
