Judo Worthing

A YOUNG team made up of six players, travelled to Worthing Leisure Centre, Worthing to represent Harlow Judo Club in the South Coast Open Green Belt & Below competition in their first competition of the year. Our players ranged from the inexperienced competitors to the experienced and consisted of Eli Balski (8), Thomas Norman (11), George Franks (11), Sam Cobbin-Brown (11), Owen Lambert (12) and Giacomo Misuraca (15).

Competing in their groups based on grade and weight, first up in group 1, novice to 6th mon (red to yellow belt), Bronze medals went to Thomas and George. Unfortunately Eli was unplaced despite showing great judo techniques. As often happens, team players face each other and on this occasion, Eli battled hard against George, however Eli’s inexperience lost out to the more experienced George and was knocked out of the competition.

In the next group, Sam being one of two entries in his weight group, was placed into the next group up. He fought valiantly but was unable to win any of his fights and came away with a Silver medal.

The next groups were for the higher graded players, 7th mon to 12th mon (orange to green belt). Owen’s own weight group was merged with the group below however, this did not deter the youngster in winning all his fights in great style to secure the Gold.

In the final group, Giacomo won his first fight with ease however then struggled with a hip injury which prevented him from fighting to his full potential. He soldiered on nonetheless to come away with a Bronze medal.

Head Coach, Mick Ellis, said “It was a very good day’s result with productive judo throughout the day from his team and was proud of them, especially the lower grades”.
