Don’t Walk On By as Harlow’s Social Strollers is expanding

THE popular led walk programme Active Harlow Social Strollers is expanding with a new and exciting location.

The programme, which is accredited by Walking for Health, is currently held in Harlow Town Park on a fortnightly basis but you can now also take part in a weekly Sunday morning walk at Parndon Wood Nature Reserve.

The walks are free, fun and social and an excellent way to get fit and help you to stay healthy. Information recently released by Sport England stated that there are 20 benefits of walking just 30 minutes per day including:

· Helping you to maintain a healthy weight;

· Reducing your risk of cancer;

· Reducing your risk of heart disease;

· Reducing your risk of type 2 diabetes;

· Reducing Stress;

· Boosts your mood;

· Improving quality of life,

· Improving lung function and

· Strengthening bones and muscles amongst other benefits.

The walks last approximately 45 minutes to an hour and everyone is welcome. The dates of the next walks are:

· Harlow Town Park (meet in the School Lane Car Park): 10am Friday 16 February,

· Parndon Wood Nature Reserve: 11.30am on Sunday 11 February and every Sunday following that.

No specialist equipment is necessary and participants are encouraged to arrive 10 minutes before the walk starts and to wear appropriate clothing and footwear for the weather conditions.

In addition to the Active Harlow Social Stroller walks there other opportunities to join led walks in Harlow. Nordic Walking is proving extremely popular with several walks taking place per week. Nordic Walking is a good way to exercise because it using the poles helps to support your joints and uses 90% of the body’s muscles. Residents who are interested in becoming more active and starting to walk more often but are unable to attend the led walks are encouraged to download the Public Health England Active 10 App from www.nhs.uk/oneyou/active10. The app encourages people to undertake a regular brisk 10-minute walk to improve health, boost mood, boost energy and clear your head.
