A TEAM of low grade Harlow Judo Club players took up the invitation to attend Comberton Judo Club Red & Yellow belt championships. Comberton Judo Club, whose main focus is competitive judo with athletes fighting at every level, are well respected. The task was made more difficult for Harlow players as one of their coaches is also a member of Harlow Judo Club.

The young Harlow squad was represented by Millie Morgan (8), Izzie Germaine (11), Jack Loft (9), Sorin Petrica (12), David Franks-Whelan (12), Harry Franks (10), Ramy Mamouri (10) and Thomas Norman (11).

The event turned out, due to the format used on the day, to last much longer than expected and making a long day for all involved. It was a very quiet crowd by the time the Harlow team were called to fight. Things changed when the Harlow team burst into action with many maximum Ippon scores being achieved early in the players respective fights.

Ramy only had one player to take on who was 16kg heavier, but on the advice of the senior coach Mick Ellis, who had to recruit Ramy’s mother to persuade her son to fight, ended in a Gold medal for the Harlow player.

Sorin disposed of all his opposition very quickly to gain a Gold in the Red belt section. Mick then asked him to fight in the Yellow belt section where only Sorin’s inexperience stopped him getting a place in the final and ended up with a Bronze medal.

David and Thomas listened to instruction and fought very well and also defeated their respective opposition very quickly and skilfully to gain their Gold Medals.

The young squad had a very successful and exciting day in Cambridge and came away with the following medals:-

Gold medals – Thomas, David, Ramy and Sorin (in the Red belt section)
Silver medals – Millie, Izzie and Jack,
Bronze medals – Harry and Sorin (was also entered in the Yellow belt section)
Congratulations to the whole team who represented themselves, the club and the town with honour.
