Athletics: Superb Sidnie shines in Sheffield

FIFTEEN-year-old Sidnie Ward, a Burnt Mill pupil travelled to Sheffield for the first time competing in these championships.

The reigning South of England and Essex Under 17 800 indoor champion ran in the second heat on the Saturday. Sidnie sat at the back of the pack before taking closer order towards the 600 metre mark.At that point Sidnie cut loose to win his heat in 1 mins 59.72 a new PB.

In the final the next day Sidnie again stayed out of trouble early on in a much faster race.With 200 remaining there were four runners closely bunched. Coming off the last bend Sidnie swept into the bronze medal position running a massive new PB of 1 mins 56.73.

Sidnie, who was representing Woodford Green with Essex Ladies was just half a second down on the winner Adam Saul Braddock from Wolverhampton and Bilston
