2018 British Schools Championships – SheffieldJudo Owen

OWEN Lambert (12) made the long and snow bound trip to Sheffield to represent his School, The John Warner School and Club, Harlow Judo Club, in the prestigious 2018 British Schools Championships.

This National high level event attracts Schools/Clubs from all over England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland and was very well attended and all those competing were of a high standard. There was a specific section of the competition that included those with Special Needs and Visually Impaired players.

These Championships are held each year and are very well attended, sometimes oversubscribed. To gain priority qualification, the player must win either a Gold or Silver medal in the various qualifying Regional areas and ultimately be of a specific grade to enter the finalé in Sheffield.

Owen (12) originally qualified and secured a place in the London regional heats back in November 2017. Representing his School on this occasion, he competed in the Year 6/7 group u38 kg category. He won his first fight with ease. His second fight, despite scoring first, was unable to hang on to the lead for the duration of the 3 minute contest. His opponent scored 2 waza-ari’s within the last 50 seconds thereby winning this fight. This now meant that Owen had dropped down to the repecharge and had to fight for a Bronze medal which he did displaying brilliant judo techniques and in great style.
