FIVE players represented Harlow Judo Club in the London Open 2018, held at UEL, Docklands. With over 350 players, this high level event attracted players of all levels from all over the UK and was spread over 4 mats. The standard of Judo was therefore going to be high and everyone who attended, was not disappointed.
Three of the Club’s boys competed in the Minors category (group 1) (years 2006-2010) and 2 fought in group 2 being the Pre-Cadets category (years 2004-2005).
In group 1, (Minors) first up was George Franks (11) in his weight group. This was a very popular weight category which was split over 2 mats. George, having recently graded to yellow belt and the his first competition since doing so, fought well in his pool and made it through to the cross-over but unfortunately despite trying hard, was unable to progress any further in the compound knockout stage and after 2 fights, was knocked out of the competition. Next up was Thomas Norman (11) who, like his fellow team mate, also graded very recently and was his first competition at his new grade. He put in a great effort in his weight category and battled valiantly but sadly, was knocked out of the competition. The last of the minor boys was Sam Cobbin-Brown (11). He fought extremely well in his weight group and displayed great ne-waza (ground work technique), to take the Gold medal.
In the Pre-cadets section (group 2), Owen Lambert (12) also had a great day winning all his fights via Ippon (maximum score) in his own weight group to claim the Club’s second Gold medal. Lewis Carter (14) was the last representative and despite the long wait after weigh in, put in a superb effort but sadly, was unable to progress to the medal rounds.
Coach Mick Ellis said “I am very pleased with the team’s overall performance today – they all fought really well and did their best, which is what I ask of them”.
