INVEST Essex puts Harlow on the map in Boston
Harlow Science Park received a boost in profile when INVEST Essex’s Dave Russell-Graham attended this month’s Biotechnology Innovation Organisation (BIO) International Convention in Boston, MA.
Russell-Graham, who has worked as the Scientific Development Advisor for Harlow Science Park, represented the county as part of the MedCity, London & Partners stand at BIO – one of 24 stands covering the UK and Northern Ireland.
As part of his remit overseeing the Life Sciences & Healthcare Cluster for INVEST Essex – an inward investment and business support agency (www.investessex.co.uk) – Russell-Graham was out in Boston to champion the cause of Harlow in its position right in the middle of the UK’s London-Stansted-Cambridge Innovation Corridor.
Primera Air’s new flight route from Stansted to Boston came just in time for Russell-Graham and other high profile UK delegates including the Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, James Palmer and One Nucleus CEO, Tony Jones to travel to BIO 2018 from the Essex airport.
BIO is one of the world’s largest trade associations, representing biotechnology companies, academic institutions, state biotechnology centres and related organisations across the world.
Such was the convention’s appeal, BIO 2018 drew 18,289 biotechnology industry leaders – the most attendees in the last 10 years – from 49 US states and 67 countries.
With 46,916 one-on-one meetings held during the four days of the convention, a Guinness World Record for ‘The Largest Business Partnering Event’ was set.
Work is underway at Harlow Science Park so BIO 2018 was seen as an opportunity to showcase it as a potential location for life sciences businesses.
As well as the Science Park development, Public Health England (PHE) are in the process of relocating to Harlow and with a potential new hospital to go alongside the new garden community to the north of Harlow these are exciting times for the town.
